| What a huge difference! From a silent, cold corner to a warm, buzzing gathering - that was the wonderful change before and after the Clementi Hobby Club activity started at the Senior’s Corner at the void deck of Block 409 Clementi Ave 1. Before the activity, a representative from Highpoint Community Services Association briefed us on the nature of the weekly sessions, explaining that the sessions brought to them additional attention, companionship and a certain level of rehabilitative exercise above and beyond that of what their busy families provided. Just as the briefing came to a close, the elderly started streaming in, injecting warmth and vitality to the gathering. The smiles that the elderly wore as they chatted with the each other suggested to me that they had been looking forward to the weekly sessions and in meeting up with their familiar companions. I was very encouraged by the positive energy that the elderly radiated. The session started with dance movements that encouraged the elderly to exercise their limbs. It was not long before the volunteers and the elderly alike broke into a sweat moving to the rhythm and beat of the music. The movements were definitely a good form of physiotherapy for the elderly. This was followed by some simple ball games that sought to improve hand-eye coordination. Having been frequent participants with much experience, some of the elderly were now experts at the game; they outshone most of the volunteers! After sweating it out, it was time for a break and the efforts of the volunteers who helped in dishing out the food paid off. The elderly eagerly tucked in to the food, supplementing the energy that they expended. Over plates of noodles and aromatic cups of coffee, the volunteers chatted with the elderly and got to know them better. With well-fed stomachs, we proceeded on with some board games to stimulate mental agility. Sounds of laughter and happy talk could be heard everywhere, be it after the precarious stack of Janga blocks toppled over, piecing puzzles together or picking marbles from a pail of water using just chopsticks. At the end of the fun-filled morning, I realised that through the hype of it all, I had helped to brighten up the lives of the group of elderly present. The representative from Highpoint shared that the activities were very appealing and through word of mouth, more and more elderly had expressed interest in joining the sessions. I was surprised by the impact of our simple actions but I was certainly glad to have been a part of this energising programme! |
