While searching for a meaningful event to devote my time to, I chanced upon the SG Cares volunteer opportunity as a lunchtime befriender at Henderson Senior Citizens’ Home and decided to sign up for it. Little did I know that a single click on the signup button was to be the start of a truly eye-opening experience for me especially since it was my first time interacting with the elderly as a volunteer.
As always, the start was difficult since most of us did not have much experience. At this juncture, I guess all we had to do as volunteers was to pluck up our courage and be more willing to interact and communicate with the elderly. They were very sporting as well and there was even this old gentleman who was dancing and grooving to the beat, all by himself! I was pleasantly surprised by how independent and cheerful the elderly were despite their age and the absence of family members around to give them the much needed support.
I learnt a very valuable lesson from this time with the elderly - to treasure all that I have right now and be contented. I believe it is this very contentment that has helped them to maintain their positive outlook of life and to live their lives to the fullest. I would really love to return to the home again to help them out on future activities. |
