The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve welcomed 6 SG Cares volunteers along with 30 students where they assisted in controlling the growth of invasive plants in the forest, allowing trees to grow healthily.
An introduction and safety briefing was conducted by NParks staff. For illustration purposes, real-life photos of animals and invasive plants were shown to the volunteers.
The volunteers were then led by NParks staff along the forest trails and arrived at their “workstations”. The dense vegetation was largely populated by the invasive species – Batman Plant. They then identified the unique leaf shapes and removed the plants (i.e., tuber, roots and all). Trash bags were quickly filled up. At some point, volunteers were also comparing the tuber sizes of the batman plants. The largest tuber removed was as huge as a soup bowl!
Having seen the forest area less populated with the batman plants, volunteers gleamed with satisfaction on their bags of achievement (i.e., the remains of the invasive plants).
In all, the volunteers found the activity to be interesting and had a good workout. They felt a sense of satisfaction to have weeded out these harmful plants from the healthy plants and vegetation.
