The first Coastal Clean-up activity attracted 13 first-time volunteers. Since then, there had been four other coastal cleanup sessions that had about 10 volunteers each.
The activity starts with a briefing about the safety issues and the reasons on why it was necessary to clean the area. Joining them were a group of regular volunteers who were there every month. The activity is dependent on the tide times, and during low tide is the best period as there are a lot of rubbish just off the shoreline. The regular volunteers brought rakes to collect the rubbish along the shoreline and in the water while SG Cares volunteers placed them into trash bags. The amount of rubbish collected was quite unbelievable. The volunteers could not have imagined that the waters of Singapore can be so littered with rubbish such as plastic bags, bottles and cans. Also found once was a plank with several rusty nails on it which could cause serious injury to beachgoers. The volunteers and our staff present all found the activity to be extremely meaningful and enjoyed themselves. Most of the SG Cares volunteers wanted to continue helping the environment and continued to sign up for the beach cleanup sessions. |
