I was surprised by the professionalism that the volunteer coordinators and leader displayed when facilitating the volunteer session at All Saints Home. The brief introduction allowed me an opportunity to interact with the rest of the volunteers at the beginning of the session while the debrief session closed up with invaluable and informative feedback and discussion on the contributions we had and how we can do better next time! Well, I guess here is the essence of it all. I come away from mingling with the elderly in All Saints Home with wonderful memories and many moments of laughter and of fun shared with them and my peer volunteers. Most of the elderly folk are surprising easy to mingle with and it takes little effort to break the ice (even though I speak no dialect). Such a lovely, enthusiastic and childlike bunch, it took only a sprinkle of simple actions, a dollop of love and sincerity to make them happy. A kindly handshake, a hug, a smile, a game or sing-along were all it took to help us warm up with each other instantly. I was actually a little sad when the session ended but I am/was not surprised to feel that way as this just explained the initial bonding that can develop when we genuinely give with love and care, even within a short time. The quality of time spent means so much to the old folks and it plays a big part of their lives. Indeed love extends to faith and hope and far outweighs other things in life. By their responses, I rejoice knowing that the old folks enjoyed our presence. Yup, I miss them already!
